From Script to Screen

Hello again! Time to let you in for a behind the scenes glimpse of how we, at Thousand Media, work creatively with our clients in creating our top quality, professional TV Commercials and Online Video content. I’m going to assume that if you are here reading this blog post, you have seen and read the services that we provide but we thought it would be a good idea to go into this in more depth for you!

First, we meet with you to understand your business, your objectives, and services as well as your desired demographics. From this meeting, we are able to form a brief where we formulate our ideas. Once the concepts are formed, we turn them into scripts and storyboards so you are able to get a visual sense of the end product. At the end of this stage, we come back and pitch these concepts back to you free of charge!

Once it is established what concept you like the most, we develop the idea further in a creative rationale that obtains all the relevant documentations needed for you to make your decision on whether this is the concept you would want to go with for your campaign.
From there, we agree on the budget and Thousand Media get the official go-ahead to start Production! Contracts are formed and invoices for the first 50% of the budget are sent and away we go! (pssst… if you would like to hear more about what’s included in our production process, click here.)

As you’ve most likely seen all over our website and social media, we take care of the whole production from Script to Screen. As soon as you give us the official go ahead, we are busy, busy, busy making sure the campaign achieves its maximum potential, starting with scouting for the perfect location to set your TV advertisement or online video. From then on we invite you into our humble abode at 77-79 Blythe Road for a Pre-Production meeting where we fill you in on our plans and make sure you are 100% happy with the progress taking place for the campaign and the choices being made. Casting would also take place on this day (if the concept requires actors). After that, we knuckle down and prepare the remaining details/requirements for the upcoming shooting days.

On the day of the shoot, you get to see us in action and oversee the whole production day from start to finish, making sure you are happy with the outcome of the video. The day after the filming ends, our editor knuckles down to create the first Offline Edit for your viewing. From there, we await your feedback and make the desired changes to your campaign and present the Second Cut to you a week later! But it doesn’t stop there, while you are looking at that, we also send it off to our composer to compose some magical, original music that will transform your campaign before inviting you back into our lovely Production House to sit down with us for your Final Online Edit to oversee us putting all the finishing touches on the master edit, ready for clearance for broadcast (Clearcast).

After it’s cleared we will send it along to the required destinations so you don’t have to worry about a thing!

Our Top Five Favourite Adverts!

Here at Thousand Media, we love watching advertisements as well as admiring and praising the work of many advertising production companies around.

Today is no exception.

In fact, this blog post is a form of celebration if you will because we are going to count down our 5 favourite advertisements! Starting with…

1.Guinness | Surfer:

…Guinness ‘Surfer’! These aren’t particularly in order but this is definitely favourite at Thousand Media HQ mainly due to the sheer creativity of the advertisement. Guinness are always known for their iconic advertisements, but this one created by Jonathan Glazer is truly something else. As the description of the YouTube video states: “From Leftfield’s music and the ‘Moby Dick’ voiceover to the surfers battling Neptune’s Horses, it’s the perfect cinema ad.”

2. Investec | Races:

This leads us onto Investec. This TV Commercial is so cinematically beautiful with the combination of the locations, costumes, the cinematography and the editing styles that this is a clear favourite with the Director here at TM.

3. Carling | Black Label:

Carling is another brand that always likes to create iconic advertisements for their viewers, this being no exception. Personally, I’ve never tasted Black Label (and in all honesty, I doubt I would ever particularly want to) but after watching Carling’s famous campaign created in the early 70’s using the tagline “I bet he drinks Carling Black Label”, I’m wondering whether I should. I suppose in that regard, the campaign worked.

This humour filled spoof of Dambusters advert created for the campaign is probably the most famous, and our personal favourite due to how excellently executed it is.

4. WaterAid | Help them do their business:

This is personally one of my favourite advertisements around due to the comedic approach Grain Media (and WaterAid) have taken to DRTV, something we at Thousand Media are prone to do ourselves.

Not only have they taken this new approach to DRTV, but they did it in a way that still captured the true meaning of the campaign and what the organisation itself stands for – they never lost the message they were trying to get across with humour instead, they put the message in a way that we as a westernised country would grasp easily and relate to: we wouldn’t want to go to the bathroom in those environments, so why should people less fortunate than us be forced to?

5. WaterAid | If men had periods – “manpons”:

Next on our list is produced once again by WaterAid (are you sensing a theme here?) in the form of parody advertisement for a menstrual item for men called ‘manpons‘. Are you hooked by that name? Because I sure was.

There’s always been this misconception that men and women can’t share the same skin/healthcare products as well as the most obvious and prominent ‘taboo’ of the female periods and the constructs society has on the matter. What I love particularly about this ad is its sheer blatant silliness from start to finish, which you can see in its style of video (most notably, the tone of voice over and choice of backing music) and the written dialogue portrayed on the screen both on and off the additional graphics. However, what I love the most about this advertisement is, of course, its message. The title “If men had periods” essentially calls out the annoying misconception in the industry that male products have to be marketed and branded as extremely masculine ‘only for men’ products as well as stating in the ending text that not all women with periods are able to look after themselves properly during their periods due to the lack of hygienic toilet environments – again, sticking to the true meaning of what the company is about.

Why Does TV Advertising Work?

While it cannot be denied that TV advertising is the most effective advertising medium around, at least, not from the office of Thousand Media; there have been tons of evidence that help back this claim on the internet through the years and it just doesn’t seem to be diminishing – no matter the online platform’s continued rise in popularity. However, the question I am asking today is: why does Television Advertising work so well?

While online content rises in popularity with the online video streaming websites such as Netflix and Hula and social media websites like Facebook and Twitter, you would expect the impacts of TV advertisements to plummet in their sales due to consumer/audience reaches but it never did. In actuality, digital marketing cannot make up the reach TV delivers on its own. Digital is and should be used in a way that compliments TV advertising to form a more effective multimedia strategy (but we will talk about that in a later blog post).

What makes TV Advertising work so well, I believe, is the way it focuses purely on the targeted, correct consumers for the brand, services or company that is being advertised by showcasing the advertisement in the peak times the targeted demographic would be watching. Not only this, but it is the most effective way to not only maintain and secure new clients than any other advertising medium but to increase profit through ROI! A recent study shows that with every £1 invested in Television Advertising, £1.79 is returned to the investor which is above any other form of advertising medium!!

Overall, TV Advertising is a fantastic way to advertise your campaigns, it allows you to reach a broader audience (87% of people over 18!) like no other single advertising medium while giving you the chance to tell your message with a compelling story, instantly engaging with your customers in innovative ways – what’s not to love?

Statistics show that companies distributing video that are 88% of short pieces (around 30 secs) are watched through to the end on their mobiles which cannot be said for those viewing the same advertisement on a computer.
  • Search engines love videos. In fact, many search engines put a high priority on video content which raises the ranking on certain pages searched. Meaning that the more a video advertisement is shared on social media, the higher the likelihood that your desired target audience would find you when searching the relevant topics.
